How To Plan And Host The Ultimate Sleepover

You decided you wanted to host a sleepover. You and your friends have made the plans, set the date and gotten the permission to do so. It’s been a while since you have a sleepover and after the long and time-consuming process of trying to get the permission to host it and sorting the logistics on how everyone is gonna make it, you have succeeded!

Congrats, hate to burst you bubble but that’s only the first half of it. Now you need to decide what exactly will happen at the sleepover, what activities will you do, what will you eat and all that.

Well lucky for you I’m here to help you out! Not to brag, but I think I’m a sleepover pro if you take into account just how many sleepovers I have attended and hosted. Before you, I present a short guide that will hopefully help you host one of the most fun sleepovers you have had in a while.

Since they are three major things you need to take into consideration in order to make your sleepover perfect in all aspects I will handle them in sections. All the other smaller details will come along the way so don’t worry about them. So, unto the first major section

1. Activities

Obviously to have a fun sleepover you need fun activities that keep you so busy that sleeping isn’t an option. So here are 11 fun and easy activities you can try out.

a. Karaoke ⋆。°•☁︎

I think karaoke is a peak sleepover activity that in most cases isn’t widely done. I personally love karaoke because when you’re in such a casual setting you are free to sound however you want. You can burst out your glorious singing skills (if you have them) or you can sing like a dying bird and either way it will be so fun. Even better when you sing a duet. You can take it a step further and hold your own talent show. Its is an easy activity to carry out, all you truly need is a device with YouTube and anything to act as a mic. Though you can also use a karaoke bar is you have one or purchase one if you can!

b. Do just dance ⋆。°•☁︎

I think Just dance was the first video game I ever played and of course it was at a party. The concept of Just Dance has always appealed to me so that’s why it’s the second on this guide. To set it up, all you need is a gaming console and any version of the game you have or can get. As an alternative, you can just go to YouTube and search just dance and you will find many already uploaded dances (and you can also search for specific dances which I think is a bonus considering you don’t have the actual game) Just dance is very flexible, my three  go ideas with just dance is one playing the game as it is designed (this is best if you have the actual game), two is learning the dance to a song you like ( Bonus points on the fun meter if it’s a group dance because learning dances in a group is always more amusing) and three is just the same as the first one put on without the actual game.

c. Baking ⋆。°•☁︎

Baking has a chokehold on me, I fear and i can only bake one thing! Despite that saddening fact it’s another awesome activity to try. I suggest bake a variety of things such as cookies, cupcakes, cakes, bread, pizza, so you can look for some different recipes that you would like to try. It’s also good alternative to buying many snacks as you can just get up and have heaps of fun baking your own.  Also, when planning recipes make sure to take into consideration any allergies in order to prevent any unwanted incidents.

d. Play board games ⋆。°•☁︎

Board games are the universal way to kill boredom and the biggest bonus is the more you are the more fun they are! I recommend competitive games board games as it’s so much fun watching your friends crash out over a simple game.

e. Making an escape room ⋆。°•☁︎

I know you must be wondering, an escape room? If so, you really underestimate how far creativity can take you. All you need is paper, colour pencils/ markers and a vision. Yeah, it’s not going to be as good as a real one but we on a seriously tight budget, gotta make use of what we have. BUT if you already have the idea in advance you can go to a crafts store to buy any supplies you need. I can’t exactly give you a step-by-step guide to making a fun escape room but I can give you one or two tips. One being, try your best to utilize the whole house, it makes it way more fun and another one being you need one person to set it up and be a guide. So, each round take turns setting up the room and changing the puzzles or hiding places of items so everyone can get to experience the room. Also, make sure to be attentive when organizing your escape room because if you’re not, you escape room will be inescapable (trust me, I know from experience)

f. Making a fort ⋆。°•☁︎

This is tradition, no good sleepover lacks a good pillow fort. Time to see just how architecturally gifted you all are. I don’t think I have to explain much about making forts because honestly, it’s pretty straightforward and all good forts come from extensive planning and a lot of brain power so I’m going to leave that to you.

g. Doing crafts ⋆。°•☁︎

Making crafts is always so much more fun with friends making it a great sleepover activity. To prepare for this first make a list of crafts you want to make such as mood boards, burn books, friendship bracelets, Painting tote bags, oil pastels, diamond paintings, embroidery, calligraphy, knitting, crocheting etc. Then buy the required supplies according to the number of people attending.

h. Movie marathon ⋆。°•☁︎

Another sleepover tradition that cannot left out. Pick a selection of movies you know will be enjoyable for everyone present (e.g. if someone can’t watch or deal with a certain type of movie, avoid playing it) and if you can, try varying the genres to make it more interesting. You can also rewatch shows and movies that you all love.

i. Scavenger hunt/ treasure hunt ⋆。°•☁︎

What’s a good get together without a treasure hunt? First you need to decide what your treasure is, the location/ boundaries of the game and the difficulty. Second, you need to make the clues, you can either write then or draw them out. You can also decide to get creative with your clues, for example I went to a camp a few years ago and we had a treasure hunt, the clues were bible verses (it was a church camp) and the verses held a clue to where the next clue and eventually once you found all the clues you report to any teacher to get your prize. And don’t forget to get creative with it.

j. Solve a murder mystery ⋆。°•☁︎

I can’t be the only one who loves to solve murder mysteries during their free time. You can order a murder mystery kit online during the preparation for the sleepover or use a free pdf file (you can find a few online) and print it out. Alternatively, you can play murder mystery games online. An idea I can share is, you all play a Murdle game and see how can solve the mystery the fastest. All you need is for all participants to have devices and google Murdle and go to the site, everyday there is a free short murder mystery game that tons of fun to play.

k. Charades ⋆。°•☁︎

The ultimate party game (and for good reason). Charades is the perfect game to make everyone loosen up and have fun if you’re having trouble getting people to be relaxed. This is how to play, divide everyone into teams and get them to choose a team name. You can also select a designed person time keeper or let any of the groups be time keepers (if you trust them enough lol). Gather a selection of words or phrases such as movies, celebrities, animals etc or use a pre made set of cards. Alternatively, if you don’t have the actual card game and don’t feel like making your own cards, you can opt for the mobile version of the game. In this version on of your teammates stands with their back facing the rest of your team with a phone on their head. You job is to act out the word you see the screen as the game progresses. Keep your scores and see how has the most potential of being an actor.

3. Things to keep in mind ﹏ ★ ! ˖ ࣪ 💭

Finally, onto the last section of this, things you need to keep in mind to prevent any accidents or incidents during the sleep over and if they occur how to deal with them.

  1. Establishing house rules ⋆.ೃ࿔*:・

Despite being a party, it is important to have some ground rules in order to stay orderly. So as the host you need to set guidelines that should be followed and also set restrictions where necessary such as areas that are off-limits. Also discuss noise levels as to be considerate to others in the area.

b. Emergency preparedness ⋆.ೃ࿔*:・

Have emergency contacts of all of your guests just in case of anything (though don’t worry I’m sure everything will be alright!) Keep a first aid kit accessible in case any injuries occur.

c. Homesickness ⋆.ೃ࿔*:・

Sometimes some of your guests may be feeling of homesick and if you have ever been homesick at a party or hangout you know just how bad it feels, so as the host it’s your responsibility to make your guests all feel at home. To do this you should try to make the environment more comfortable and tend to them. Try help them change their perspective on the situation and keep involving them in group discussions and activities.

d. Conflict between guests ⋆.ೃ࿔*:・

This is probably the last thing you want at your party, a conflict between your guests. Don’t worry though, disagreements are quite common and can be dealt with easily. Act as a mediator or a neutral party and listen to both sides of the story and help both parties to resolve the issue. You can also engage the group in a different activity to shift focus from the conflict.

e. Morning after and pick up ⋆.ೃ࿔*:・

Make sure you are prepared for the morning after such as what you will serve for breakfast and have your guests co-ordinate their pick up. Make sure to help your guests pack up and get their belongings together. Don’t forget to make sure everyone helps with the cleaning process before they leave.

Before i end this post, i just want to say something short. It is quite a privilege to be able to attend and host sleepovers so I say stay grateful to all those who made it all possible, namely the parents and guardians.

I hope this guide has been an insightful one and has helped you make your sleepover hosting a little bit easier and a whole lot more fun.
